For some strange reason, Germany has maintained Adolph Hitler’s Nazi policy of persecuting families who want to homeschool their children which is a very strong and growing movement in the United States. And also for some strange reason, the Obama administration -- but maybe not so strange considering their own overbearing (some say tyrannical) federal polices -- seems to support Germany’s tyrannical oppression of families who homeschool in that nation.
This is evidenced by the fact that the Obama administration is working overtime to deport German refugees, Uwe and Hannelore Romeike and their 6 children, evangelical Christians who are homeschooling their children in Tennessee. The tyrannical German government is demanding that the United States deport the Romeike family -- who paid stiff fines when they lived in Germany because they refused to stop homeschooling their children -- so that they can face probable stiff jail sentences along with their children being shipped off to orphanages. Two years after they began homeschooling their children in 2006, the Romeikes faced Gestapo-like visits from the German police who were tasked to force the Romeike children to attend public schools.
“The Washington Times” editorial today entitled “A plea from abused homeschoolers; Parents seek asylum to keep family intact,” reports that homeschooling has been illegal in Germany since 1938, at the height of Hitler’s power, “when the Nazis brooked no resistance to state control of everything. The Romeikes were fined thousands for their resistance.”
One would think that after the United States of America freed Germany from Hitler’s abominable reign of terror in 1945, that one of the first things the new German government would have done was to end this tyrannical law against German families who homeschool their children. But it did not, and now it seems, that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is determined to continue dictator Adolph Hitler’s policy. Unfortunately, an American president is giving her cover.
However, enter Michael Farris’ campaign to urge the White House -- which has liberally allowed homosexuals from nations from around the world who have said they were being persecuted to stay in America -- to allow the Romeikes to remain in America.
Michael Farris, a constitutional lawyer, who founded the Home School Legal Defense Association and Patrick Henry College is urging fair-minded Americans to sign a petition on the White House website urging the Obama administration to grant permanent legal status to the Romeike family. Thus far, the petition has been signed by 30,000 Americans, but it needs 70,000 more signatures by April 19th to get an official response from what many agree is the most anti-family administration in American history. Michael Farris is also representing the Romeikes -- who were granted political asylum in the United States in 2010 -- in their fight against the Obama administration which wants to deport them. Farris told the Fox News Channel: “The Obama administration is basically saying there is no right to homeschool anywhere. They are trying to send a family back to Germany, where they would certainly lose custody of their children.”
Obama’s Board of Immigration Appeals -- which has allowed some 11 million illegal immigrants to stay in America -- overturned the decision to grant them asylum last year. “The Washington Times” editorial says: “These factors moved U.S. Immigration Judge Lawrence O. Burman three years ago to let them stay. ‘It does appear that there is animus and vitriol involved here, that the government of Germany really resents the homeschoolers, not just because they are not sending the children to school, but because they constitute a group that the government, for some unknown reason, wishes to suppress,’ Judge Burman wrote. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear the case on April 23.”
Michael Farris was quoted in a WND.com article on March 31st: “When the United States government says that homeschooling is a mutable choice, it is saying that a government can legitimately coerce you to change this choice. In other words, you have no protected right to choose what type of education your children will receive. We should understand that in these arguments, something very concerning is being said about the liberties of all Americans.”
Farris also said, “The U.S. Department of Justice and the White House have the ability to be lenient.” Let us hope that the Obama administration will reconsider and grant amnesty to the Romeike family.
